The second half of Matthew 27 briefly describes the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Below is a list of all the things that Matthew mentions Jesus going through. Matthew 27 – Part a

In Matthew chapter 27 we read about the staged “trial”, torture, humiliation, and crucifixion of Jesus. Salvation is made possible through the events covered in this chapter. There would be no hope for us if it were not for the willingness of Jesus to do his Father’s will, and die in our place as the perfect and final sacrifice. From Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, we know that this is the only way that the justice of God can be satisfied, while at the same time showing mercy to the people who deserve the punishment. (more…)

Matthew 26

In Matthew 26, all the events leading to Jesus’ crucifixion begin to rapidly take place:

  • Jesus and his disciples go to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast.
  • Judas secretly meets with the Pharisees and agrees to betray Jesus in exchange for 30 pieces of silver.
  • The Lord’s supper takes place.
  • Jesus predicts the betrayal of Judas, the denial of Peter, and the desertion of all the disciples.
  • Jesus prays in the garden in Gethsemane, where he is also arrested.
  • The Disciples flee and desert Jesus.
  • Jesus is tried before the Sanhedrin (Jewish ruling body).
  • Peter denies knowing Jesus. (more…)

Matthew 17

In Matthew chapter 17 we will look at a few statements that Jesus makes predicting his death and resurrection. The first statement occurs after the transfiguration of Jesus on a mountain, witnessed by Peter, James, and John. (more…)
