Understanding The Trinity
May 7th, 2008 Posted in GeneralGod is incredibly unique, so it’s impossible for our created human minds to completely and clearly grasp all the uniqueness of the only existing being that has no beginning and no end. Understanding the Holy Trinity is a part of God that can be particularly difficult for us to grasp. The word “trinity” is not in the Bible, but it is clear that there are three separate persons that make up the one God. These three persons are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
What has helped me understand the trinity the most, is to simply look at you and me. We are created in the image of God. We are dim reflections of who God is, and like God, we each have three separate parts of which we’re made. We have:
- A soul (mind/consciousness). The part of us who is conscious and thinks and feels.
- A spirit. Closely tied to the soul, the part of us that can commune with God, and to some extent, with other people. Our “spiritual side”. It’s hard to describe, yet every culture in history has recognized its existence.
- A physical body that houses the spirit and soul and is the visible presentation of who we are. The part of us that performs actions and interacts with the world around us.
All three parts are separate, yet at the same time, they are one. Can you see how our three separate entities make up one person? Though it’s not a perfect comparison, we can see a similarity in the three entities that make up the one God. To me, our soul resembles the Father; our spirit resembles the Holy Spirit; and our body resembles The Son.
Here is a good explanation of the Trinity from christiananswers.net:
God is a Tri-unity, with each Person of the Godhead equally and fully and eternally God. Each is necessary, and each is distinct, and yet all are one. The three Persons appear in a logical, causal order. The Father is the unseen, omnipresent Source of all being, revealed in and by the Son, experienced in and by the Holy Spirit. The Son proceeds from the Father, and the Spirit from the Son. With reference to God’s creation, the Father is the Thought behind it, the Son is the Word calling it forth, and the Spirit is the Deed making it a reality.
We “see” God and His great salvation in the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, then “experience” their reality by faith, through the indwelling presence of His Holy Spirit
The Bible is full of descriptions of each of the three persons of the Trinity. Here are some qualities of each person as revealed to us from just from the book of John:
The Father
- The authority and leader of the Trinity - John 14:24
- Works his will through the Son - John 5:19-20
The Son
- The physical representation of God that humans are able to see - John 14:7-9
- The acting force (or hands) of God - John 1:3
- The way to the Father, the Truth, and the Life - John 14:6
The Holy Spirit
- Counselor (also translated “Helper”) - John 15:26
- Leads men’s heart to the Truth - John:16:12-15
Working together in perfect harmony, these three persons make up the one true God.
One Response to “Understanding The Trinity”

I had a dream that I interpreted to be the trinity. I am currently painting the dream.
In this dream I was standing at a field and he approached me and told me he had something to show me. He did not
speak with his mouth instead the communication was telepathic. I followed him down a worn path in the field to what
appeared like a small body of water. He raised his hand and told me to look. What I saw and felt was almost
indescribable in human words. There above the water were two fish that floated around back, forth and around each
other in what appeared some type of dance. The fish looked like crystal made of all the colors of the rainbow. The
colors where very intense and brighter than anything I have ever seen before. The colors appeared to move and shift
as the fish moved back and forth in and around one another. Upon looking at these beautiful fish, I felt such an intense
sensation of love, happiness, and peace feelings that completely indescribable in any words or terms that I know. The
sensation was so powerful my entire being felt as if it could burst with over abundance of joy. I pondered for years off
and on trying to determine what this dream meant. Although my life was busy with three small children and attending
college, the dream never left my mind. I can envision it as clear today as the night it was dreamt. Throughout the
years, I was very cautious about with whom I shared my experiences and only shared them with my family and closest
friends. I felt like the dream needed to be painted in order to share this with others. Although I wanted to paint the
dream, I lacked the confidence to attempt the re-creation of it. Currently, I am painting this dream.
